6 lawsuit against Trump was dismissed on Monday
The move comes after Smith, earlier this month following Trump’s victory in the 2024 presidential election, signaled that he would begin to narrow his case against Trump. The case was placed on the Justice Department’s docket on Monday afternoon.
Smith filed a motion to dismiss all statutes of limitations in the 2020 election interference lawsuit against Trump in Washington, DC — a widely expected move, but one that does not stop short of dismissing the case against Trump entirely. Smith has said his team plans to provide an update on the formal status of the case against Trump on December 2.
Trump pleaded not guilty to all charges in the case and took the case to the U.S. Supreme Court, arguing on the basis of presidential immunity. The high
court ruled that Trump was immune from prosecution for his official acts, forcing Smith to file a new indictment. Trump also pleaded not guilty to these new charges. Trump's lawyers sought to dismiss the election interference charges in Washington, DC, alleging that Smith was illegally appointed.
